Some notes on He polarimetry using alkali EPR
نویسنده
چکیده
It is sometimes profitable to measure the longitudinal nuclear spin polarization of He. The method described here takes advantage of the vaporized alkali metal already present in a glass target cell. Long range and short range interactions with polarized He gas result in an “effective” magnetic field felt by the alkali metal atoms. A precisely detectable Zeeman shift in the alkali EPR frequency that is proportional to the He polarization and density is produced. The EPR frequency is located by exciting the EPR transition and observing the resulting change in the D2 fluorescence. A PI feedback loop is used to lock to the EPR frequency while the direction of the He spins is reversed via AFP with respect to any baseline magnetic fields. This isolates the He contribution to the EPR frequency and consequently the He polarization can be extracted.

He polarization-dependent EPR frequency shifts of alkali-metal–He pairs
We present temperature-dependent measurements of the EPR frequency shifts for Na, K, and Rb interacting with polarized He. K and Na frequency shifts were measured via comparison with Rb frequency shifts swell known at low temperaturesd in Na-RbHe and K-RbHe spin-exchange cells. The lowered Rb vapor pressure of these “hybrid” spin-exchange cells also allowed us to extend the measured temperature...
متن کاملCollisional 3He and 129Xe frequency shifts in Rb-noble-gas mixtures.
The Fermi-contact interaction that characterizes collisional spin exchange of a noble gas with an alkali-metal vapor also gives rise to NMR and EPR frequency shifts of the noble-gas nucleus and the alkali-metal atom, respectively. We have measured the enhancement factor κ0 that characterizes these shifts for Rb-129Xe to be 493±31, making use of the previously measured value of κ0 for Rb-3He. Th...
متن کاملHyperpolarized Gas Polarimetry and Imaging at Low Magnetic Field
MR imaging with polarized noble gases has shown promise in both, biomedical and material’s imaging applications. Its advantage over the conventional proton MRI lies in its ability to produce high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), high-resolution images at low magnetic field strengths. In this work: 1. We implemented and studied in detail two methods for detecting hyperpolarization levels of 129Xe an...
متن کاملMixed Alkali Effect in Li2O -Na2O-B2O3 Glasses Containing CuO-An EPR and Optical Study
The “mixed alkali effect” is one of the classical anomalies of glass science. We report here an interesting phenomenon “Mixed Alkali Effect” observed for a series of Cu ions doped xLi2O-(30x)Na2O-70B2O3 (5 ≤ x ≤ 25) glasses, investigated by EPR and optical absorption techniques. The EPR spectra of all the investigated samples exhibit resonance signals characteristic of Cu ions in octahedral sit...
متن کاملAccurate He polarimetry using the Rb Zeeman frequency shift due to the Rb-He spin-exchange collisions
We describe a method of He polarimetry relying on the polarization-dependent frequency shift of the Rb Zeeman resonance. Our method is ideally suited for on-line measurements of the He polarization produced by spin-exchange optical pumping. To calibrate the frequency shift we performed an accurate measurement of the imaginary part of the Rb-He spin-exchange cross section in the temperature rang...
